Second Language User Support

چکیده

Computer users rarely experience entirely trouble-free interaction. The natural variety of individuals ensures that no software systems yield constantly fluent interaction for all users. In consequence, software designers often strive to ameliorate this situation by building 'user support' into their systems. User support can take different forms but, conventionally, each aims to assist the needy end-user by means of facilities directly supporting the performance of certain operations, or through supply of information that advises the user on available system functionality. The present paper briefly characterises a range of user support facilities before describing one requirement in greater detail. This aspect considers the needs of users whose mothertongue is not English, but who are obliged to use English-based information systems. In this context, 'helping the user' must reasonably extend beyond mere advice on system operation to selective elucidation of information content. We regard this move as a logical extension of the user support concept, by seeking to address specific interaction needs in a target user population. An example of this approach is described through an information system, in the domain of civil engineering, for native Chinese speakers of English.

Evaluation and Ranking of Discrete Simulation Tools

In studying through simulation, choosing an appropriate tool/language would be a difficult task because many of them are available. On the other hand, few research works focus on evaluation of simulation tools/languages and their comparison. This paper makes a couple of evaluations and ranks more than fifty simulation tools that are currently available. The first evaluation and ranking is in th...

Automating Second Language Acquisition Research: Integrating Information Visualisation and Machine Learning

We demonstrate how data-driven approaches to learner corpora can support Second Language Acquisition research when integrated with visualisation tools. We present a visual user interface supporting the investigation of a set of linguistic features discriminating between pass and fail ‘English as a Second or Other Language’ exam scripts. The system displays directed graphs to model interactions ...

Building User Interfaces with Tasks, Dialogs and XML

We present two ongoing research efforts, both aim to support the use of models for designing (multiand multiple-device) User Interfaces. The first tool, a part of the Dygimes framework, shows how context and tasks can be combined. It allows to generate prototype interfaces from context-sensitive task models. It builds uoon a runtime environment in Java and an XML-based High Level User Interface...

The Second Language Problem in User Support

Interaction between humans and computers is seldom perfect. Interactive software often includes aspects of user support to reduce the uncertainty and propensity to error experienced by many users. The present paper briefly reviews some of the common strategies for helping users and characterises the ‘second-language problem’ as a special case for support. Since most software packages are writte...

Localisation and linguistic anomalies

Interactive systems may seek to accommodate users whose first language is not English. Usually, this entails a focus on translation and related features of localisation. While such motivation is worthy, the results are often less than ideal. In raising awareness of the shortcomings of localisation, we hope to improve the prospects for successful second-language support. To this end, the present...
